Spanish-American War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was born in Prince Edward Island, Canada, and later moved to the United States. He served in the United States Marine Corps with the rank of Private on board the 'USS Marblehead.' He joined the United States Marines Corps from Boston, Massachusetts, in August of 1896 and served in the Spanish-American War in 1898. He was later awarded the Medal of Honor for his bravery and actions during the cutting of the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, on May 11, 1898. His Medal of Honor was awarded to him on July 7, 1899. His citation reads "On board the U.S.S. Marblehead during the cutting of the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, 11 May 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Campbell set an example of extraordinary bravery and coolness throughout this action." He was also awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for bravery and actions during the Spanish-American War in 1899. He stayed in active service until he was honorably discharged in October of 1901. After his military service, he married and had two daughters, Rita and Mildred, and a son Wallace who also served in the military. He passed away at a Veterans Assisted Hospital in Boston, Massachusetts, at the age of 80, and was buried with full military honours at the Mount Hope Cemetery in that city. He was a member of the Legion of Valor and of the Spanish American Veterans Post in Charlestown, Massachusetts.
