Indian Wars Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Jacksonville, Illinois, he graduated from the US Military Academy in 1870 and served as a Second Lieutenant in the 2nd US Cavalry. At Bear Paw Mountain, Montana, September 30, 1877, Lieutenant McClernand led his men in an attack on a camp of hostile Nez Perce Indians in the final battle that lead to the surrender of the Nez Perce nation. For gallantly conducted in combat with great courage, he was promoted First Lieutenant and awarded the Medal of Honoron November 27, 1894. He retired from the US Army a Brigadier General in June, 1901.
