Democrat Congressman from Iowa. He served as a delegate from Wisconsin from 1837-1839. In 1848 he was elected as one of the first Senators from Iowa and served until 1859. In 1861 he was arrested on orders from William Seward for disloyalty because of corresponding with his friend, Jefferson Davis. He served 34 days in jail until he was released by President Lincoln.
