US Senator, Presidential Cabinet Member. He graduated from Indiana Asbury University in 1845, moved to Iowa, was superintendent of public instruction in 1847, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1850 and commenced to practice law in Iowa City. He was president of Iowa Wesleyan University. In 1855, he was elected as a Free Soiler to the United States Senate and reelected as a Republican, serving until 1865. After leaving office, he was appointed by President Andrew Johnson the 8th Secretary of the Interior, serving from 1865 to 1866. He then was again elected to the United States Senate, serving 1867 to 1873. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was presiding judge of the court of commissioners of Alabama claims.
