Businesswoman. She was a co-founder of Neiman-Marcus, an American luxury department store chain. She was the sister of Herbert Marcus and the wife of A.L. Neiman, her business partners. The first store opened in Dallas, Texas, in 1907. In an era when most women either sewed their own clothes or went to dressmakers, she had upscaled ready-made dresses hanging on the rack for the customer. She encouraged the establishment of weekly fashion shows, fall fashion expositions, and, beginning in 1938, the annual Neiman Marcus Awards, given to designers for distinguished service in the field of fashion. She died of pleurisy at her home after an extended illness. In 2021 her biography "A Girl Named Carrie" was published by Jerrie Marcus Smith. In 2023 there are 36 Neiman Marcus stores in the United States.
