U.S. Congressman. Moving to Afton, Minnesota, in 1862, he taught school, studied law, was admitted to the bar and proceeded to practice law in 1865. He was Attorney of Washington, (1866-68) and a member of the Minnesota State Senate, (1868, 78, 82). In 1891, he was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second Congress, serving until 1893. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he continued to practice law until his death at age 66.
