Author. She was an American novelist and poet, who was the founder in 1920 of the Poetry Society of South Carolina. Born Josephine Lyons Scott Pinckney into a wealthy family, she attended Ashley Hall , establishing, a literary magazine there and graduating in 1912. She then attended college at the College of Charleston, Radcliffe College, and Columbia University, and awarded in 1935, an honorary degree from the College of Charleston. She lived most of her life on her family's rice plantation or later, her home in Charleston. She wrote "Hilton Head" in 1941, "Three O'clock Dinner" in 1945, which was her first successful novel; and "Great Mischief" in 1949. She wrote articles for magazines and published poetry. She received numerous honors for her writing, including the Southern Authors Award in 1946. In 1988, she was posthumously inducted into the South Carolina Academy of Authors.
