Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Private in the Union Army in Company C, 1st Minnesota Infantry. He was awarded the Medal of Honor for action on July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. His citation reads "Capture of flag of 28th Virginia Infantry (C.S.A.)."
