He completed a five year apprenticeship in carpentry in 1934 and went on to work as a builder of homes around an area up to eighty miles away from home. On these distant jobs he towed a caravan in which to live for the duration of the job.
He met Edith Handley through Christchurch Church of Englands' youth group and they married at St.Mathews Church, Manly, Sydney on 22nd January 1952 and had four children, Robyn Blake (1956), Jan(1958), Karyn(1961) and Ross(1963). They built their first house at 131 Hunter Street, Gunnedah, before moving to 1 Hammilton Street, Gunnedah.
He died of a heart attack in Gunnedah, Australia on May 8th 1983 and was buried in Gunnedah General Cemetery.
