US Navy Peacetime Medal of Honor Recipient. He enlisted in the United States Navy, and was serving as a Machinist's Mate First Class on board the "Yorktown"-class twin screw gunboat "USS Bennington" when the ship's boiler exploded on July 21, 1905 while in San Diego Bay in California. He displayed extraordinary bravery in rescuing men wounded in the disaster, which resulted in the death of 66 Naval personnel. On January 5, 1906 he was awarded the MOH for his heroism, one of ll "Bennington" crew members to be so honored for their actions that day. His Medal can be seen on display today at the Veterans Memorial Hall Gallery in the Depot in Duluth, Minnesota.
