US Congressman. A member of the Republican Party, he served New Hampshire's 2nd District in the US House of Representatives from 1955 until 1963. The son of former New Hampshire governor Robert Perkins Bass, he attended Dartmouth College and Harvard Law School (the latter from where he received his degree in 1938). Bass followed his father into a career of politics, as he served in the New Hampshire House of Representatives (1939 to 1943 and 1947 to 1949). During World War II, he served with the Fourteenth Army Air Force in China, earning the Bronze Star and Yun-Ma Medal for distinguished and meritorious service from the National Government of China, while attaining the rank of major. He served in New Hampshire's State Senate (1949 to 1951), prior to being elected to the US Congress. During his tenure, Bass became known for his bipartisan philosophy, as he worked with both Republicans and Democrats on legislation. He had an unsuccessful bid for US Senate in 1962 and following his time in Washington, he returned to practicing law. His son Charles Foster Bass would also become a US Congressman, thus making a third generation of public servants.
