In 1850 he and his parents and eight siblings lived in Jenner Township, Somerset County, PA. His father worked as a blacksmith, Jacob as a collier, Frederick as a wagoner, and he and George as laborers.

In 1860 he and his first wife and their four children lived in Yoder Township, Cambria County, PA. He owned personal property worth $50 and worked as a laborer.

In 1870 he, his second wife, seven of their children, and his parents lived in Coopersdale, PA. He worked as an engineer at a mill.

In 1880 he, Eve, five of their children, and his niece, 19-year-old Mary Peterson, lived in probably the same place. He worked as a water tender in an iron rail mill, William in a brickyard, and Jacob as an engineer for a railroad. Mary was also enumerated with her parents in Jenner Township, Somerset County, PA.

In 1910 he and his third wife lived in a place they were renting at 530 Sherman Street in Johnstown, PA.
