As a young man in his early 20s, Charles experienced homesteading in the early 1900s in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Canada under extreme "bare bones" conditions. He was there with his widowed mother, several young single brothers, a married sister with her husband and two very young children, and a widowed sister and her child. He and one sister out of the seven adults remained in Canada to make it their permanent home.
