Indiana Governor. Educated as a minister at the Milan Seminary Ohio and at the Medina Academy in New York, he was a teacher a few years in Barrington, Illinois. With the advent of the Civil War, he enlisted as a Chaplin in the Union Army in 1861, serving in the 19th Illinois Regiment and was discharged one year later due to health reasons. After his military stint, he established a career in the Christian Church ministry, serving as pastor in several states and finally settled in Indiana. In 1886, he was appointed chaplain of the Indiana Grand Army of the Republic and was chosen department commander, in 1887. Entering politics, he was elected as Lieutenant Governor of Indiana, in 1888. When Governor Alvin Hovey died in office, Chase was appointed as a Republican the 22nd Indiana Governor, serving (1891-93). While in office, he endorsed the advancement of the state's road system, plus the soldiers and sailors monument was erected. Following his term as Governor, he became even more prominent as a minister and traveled nationally delivering sermons until his death at age 60.
