Ellen was the youngest child of James and Agnes Dandridge Ruffin. James and family first lived in King William County, Virginia where their families were well established, but about 1817 they moved to Christian County, Kentucky. Around 1825 the family moved again to Hardeman County, Tennessee where Ellen was born. She had eight brothers and sisters. Ellen's mother died before she was one year of age, and her father and step mother also died before she was ten. Her parents were well off, however. They owned a cotton plantation and had moved to Panola County, Mississippi by the time Ellen was a young girl. Her father left a will and seemed to provide in it for his daughter's education, because in the 1850 census, she and her next oldest sister, Cornelia, were both enrolled at the Nazareth Female Academy in Nelson County, Kentucky. It was while she was enrolled at this school that she and her sister met their future husbands. Ellen married James S. Lytle when she was only eighteen. He became a cotton buyer and went into business with Cornelia's husband, Robert A. Johnson at St. Louis, Missouri. James and Ellen lived at Kirkwood, near St. Louis, until sometime after 1880 when the family moved to Cleveland, Ohio. It may be that they came to Cleveland because Ellen's niece Maggie and husband Tom L. Johnson were situated there. James and Ellen had three children who lived to adulthood: James S. Lytle, Jr., Cornelia Ruffin Lytle, and Mary A. Lytle.
