Journalist. Born in Chicago, Illinois, he was the grandson of publisher Joseph Medill, founder of the "Chicago Tribune" and a Mayor of Chicago. Educated at Yale University, he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1903 and was editor of the "Chicago Tribune" in 1910. With the outbreak of World War I, he enlisted in the United States Army and served with distinction as a Captain of Field Artillery. After the war, he returned journalism position and founded the "New York Daily News" in 1919. In position as editor and publisher of the "New York Daily News", Patterson won a Pulitzer Prize for a series of editorials supporting Franklin Roosevelt. He also was credited taking an approach to managing the various comic strip properties in his papers and their distribution to other newspapers. He died at age 67 in New York City, New York.
