SCHOLDER, EMERY LEE Owner of E. L. Scholder's Used Cars. Ed Scholder, a resident of San Diego for well over 60 years, died Thursday, July 25, 2002. He was born August 21, 1916, in Mitchell, S. D. and moved to California in 1936. Ed was a loving husband of 59 years to Pauline Zuvich Scholder, as well as the devoted father to their 12 children. He was a WW II Veteran. A long-time member of the Used Car Dealers' Association, he was a well known businessman in the downtown and old town areas. He owned several car lots over the years, including "The Long Lot", and later "E. L. Scholder's Used Cars" at Kettner and Broadway. Ed's last car lot was located 7th and Market. Ed and his wife Paulie, who married on October 4, 1942, lived and raised their children in the Pacific Beach area. Ed was well known and loved in the community for the endless joy of life and generosity of spirit he displayed. He was active in the Boy Scouts when his boys were younger. Ed was a very religious man whose favorite books were the Bible and the Guinnes Book of World Records - and he demonstrated the lessons of both. He was the good Samaritan, of never ending faith, and always the lover of a good game or contest. His children fondly remember many cross country trips where he never failed to stop and assist anyone with a broken down car at the side of the road. As often as not these trips took them to the World's Fair or provided some other adventure where they could witness the great accomplishments and inventions of the world. Many who grew up in the Crown Point neighborhood remember Ed's Sunday evening "ice cream runs" where he took not only his own children but a busload of local kids up to Thrifty's for double-dip ice cream cones. Ed loved the water and taught almost all of his children the joys of water skiing on beautiful Mission Bay. He loved motorcycles and for years took a truck full of kids and motorcycles off to the local hills for Sunday afternoon adventures. He loved to travel and did so each summer with his whole brood - showing them his beloved United States. Most of all, Ed loved people and he loved his wife Paulie, their kids and grandchildren, and he loved the Padres. He was never too tired to bounce a young one on his knee, or to ask one of the kids how much they were making these days or how much they'd paid for a car or when they were planning on having another baby. And when the Padres were in town he always went to the games - even if it was just to go in for the free seats at the end of the 7th inning. Ed was injured in a car accident coming home from a Padres game on the evening of September 28, 2000 and was rendered a quadrapalegic. After a hospital stay, he spent the remainder of the last 19 months being expertly cared for at home by his loving daughter, Sandi Jahries, who is a Registered Nurse, with help from: her husband Jerry Jahries, also an RN; Ed's daughter Mary Akerstein, also an RN; and Ed's son and daughter-in law Daniel and Robbie Scholder - who are not medically trained but are both persons of huge heart and spirit. His other children and many grandchildren also helped out in many aspects, including his daughter Diana Nieder, who was at her parents' home daily. Ed is survived by his wife, Pauline, his sons (and their wives) Daniel and Robbie of La Jolla, David and Veronica of Lake Elsinore, Gary and Beth of Vancouver, Washington, and John and Beth of Pacific Beach; his daughters (and their spouses) Gloria Nickerson of Ft. Worth, Texas; Shonnie Emerson of Keizer, Oregon; Carol and Lynn Waddell of Escondido; Diana and Jim Nieder of Clairemont; Donna and Robbie Robinson of Los Angeles; Mary and David Akerstein of San Diego; Pat and Ken Stika of Provo, Utah; and Sandi and Jerry Jahries of San Diego; his grandchildren Jeremy, Mark, Joshua, Matthew and Natalie Emerson; Scott, Troy, and Sarah Scholder; Teresa Burkhalter-Scholder; Shen Waddell; Kris, Jacob, Michael and Steve Nieder; Paul, Chris and Jordan Scholder; Garrett Robinson; Baylee, Shea and Katie Suskin; Josh, Reo, Casey and Kelly Rose Stika; Whitney, Skye and Parker Scholder; Emery and Julia Scholder; and Lucas and Clint Scholder - as well as numerous wives and husbands of the grandchildren; and also by great-grandchildren Michael, Garrett, Alex, Christoper, Elizabeth, Lily, Adrianne, Christian, Carson, Cameron and Hannah Emerson. Ed is also survived by his brother, Tom Scholder and Tom's wife Nancy, of La Mesa. He was preceded in death by his beloved grandchildren Milo Waddell and Krishna Nieder, and his sisters Thelma and Beulah. Ed and Paulie have also taken into their hearts numerous additional children who became part of their extended family through various connections and are way too numerous to mention - there was always room for "one more" at the Scholder house! Ed gave freely of his love and was well loved in return. He will be sorely missed. A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 29th at Our Lady of Refuge Catholic Church at the corner of Oliver and Jewel in Pacific Beach, followed by a reception at the Church Hall. Burial Services will take place on that same date at approximately 2:00 p.m. at the veteran's section of El Camino Memorial Park & Mortuary in San Diego, Calif.
