World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Highgate, England, he served as a Captain in the 4th Battalion, Royal Marine Light Infantry. During the assault on Zeebrugge, Belgium, on April 23, 1918, Captain Bamford landed on the Mole from H.M.S. Vindictive with three platoons of the Royal Marines. Storming force in the face of the Mole under heavy fire, he commanded his company to establish a strong point. Then with total disregard for his own personal danger, he led an assault on the battery to the left and secured the enemy position. For most prestigious gallantry, he was promoted Major and awarded the Victoria Cross on July 23, 1918. He died at age 41 of an illness on board the H.M.S. Cumberland while on the way to a hospital in Hong Kong, China.
