US Congressman, Mississippi Governor, US Senator. He was elected to represent Mississippi in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1839 to 1841. He was ten elected as Governor of Mississippi, and served in that office from 1844 to 1848. In 1854 he was elected as a Senator from Mississippi to the United States Senate, and served there from 1854 to 1861.
