Ellen Akers Gambrell, 76, of Muncy, passed away on Friday, Nov. 4, 2011.

After an incredible life spent living around the world, Ellen departed this earth to join numerous friends and family members in heaven. Ellen grew up in Lycoming County, she graduated from Muncy High school in 1952 and then attended Mansfield State Teachers' College for a year. After receiving an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, she married and spent three decades as a career Navy wife. Ellen lived from California to Dunoon, Scotland, ultimately returning to her childhood home in Muncy.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Jennie Hunsinger; father, Fred Akers; and stepfather, Earl T. Murray. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Jeremy Dice. Survivors include her daughter, Ramona Dice of Clinton, Mo., and her children, Stephan, Jenny and Kelly; daughter, Roberta and her husband, Vernon Spink of Waterford, Mich., and their children, April, Michael and Cory; and son, William Gambrell and his wife, Ann of Virginia Beach, Va., their children, Ellen and Connor and son, Curtis Gambrell and wife, Linda and his children, Cyndi and Kyle; as well as a dear friend and partner, Jim Buck, of Muncy.

Ellen was an active mother, holding down part time jobs as she moved nearly 40 times in 25 years, while supporting her children (in all of their endeavors).

Ellen was always active in volunteer activities including the Loyal Order of the Moose, as well as countless Navy Wives Club organizations.

Later in life Ellen was very active with the American Legion in Hughesville. Ellen loved life, her friends and her family; she cherished the opportunity to move back to the Muncy area.

A visitation will be held on Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the McCarty-Thomas Funeral Home, 557 E. Water St., Hughesville. Interment will be in the Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Rolland Ritter American Legion Post 268, 515 Legion Road, Muncy, PA 17756.

Due to the recent flooding, access to the funeral home will be made by turning onto North Fifth Street and making an immediate right onto Hunsinger Alley at the rear of the funeral home.
