Alabama Governor. He graduated from the University of Tennessee, in 1850, studied law, was admitted to the Alabama Bar in 1855 and practiced law. During the Civil War, he served as a Captain of Company C, 10th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Confederate Army. After the war, he moved to Shelby County, Alabama, practiced law, was president of Central Iron Works from, in (1873-78) and was attorney for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad. He also was a member of the Alabama Senate, (1872-78). In 1878, he was elected as a Democrat the 25th Governor of Alabama, serving until 1882. During his administrations, the State Bar Association, the State Railroad, the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute for Negroes were all created. Also, the Alabama Board of Health was established, the State Board of Dental Examiners was created and the cost of state government was reduced. After his term he retired briefly to private life, he was again president of Central Iron Works and was appointed a probate judge for Shelby County, Alabama, in 1888.
