Second Boer War Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Sergeant in the Protectorate Regiment, South African Forces. On December 26, 1899, during action at Mafeking, Africa, Sergeant Martineau stopped to help a wounded comrade ten yards from the Boer trenches. He carried the man towards a bush about 150 yards from the trenches and in doing so was himself wounded. He proceeded to bandage the wounds of his comrade and was again wounded. Still supporting his comrade to safety, he was shot again which necessitated the amputation of his arm. For extreme courage in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal on December 11, 1900 and later achieved the rank of Lieutenant.
