Maori War Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Lance Corporal, in the 65th Regiment, York & Lancaster Regiment, Britsh Army. At Cameron Town, New Zealand, on September 7, 1863, Lance Corporal Ryan with two Privates, removed the body of a Captain from the field of action after he had been mortally wounded. He remained with the body all night in the bush surrounded by the enemy until his own forces returned. For most prestigious gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal. In December that same year, he drowned while trying to rescue a comrade.
