Crimea War Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Sergeant in the Scottish Fusiliers Guards, Rifle Brigade. At the Battle of the River Alma, Crimea, September 20, 1854, Sergeant Knox was conspicuous for his exertions in reforming the ranks of the Guards. Promoted Lieutenant in April, 1854, he was present with his regiment in all the Crimean engagements. His final recommendation occurred when he was the volunteer officer in charge of the ladder-party at the unsuccessful attack on the Russian emplacement at Redan on June 18, 1855, where he was wounded twice, losing his left arm. For these gallant actions, he was presented the Victoria Cross Medal by Queen Victoria at Hyde Park on the June 26, 1857.
