Crimea War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in he served as a Boatswain on the HMS Miranda in the Royal Navy. On June 3, 1855, at Taganrog, Sea of Azov, Crimea, Boatswain Cooper together with an officer landed while the town was actually under bombardment by the Allied Squadron. Garrisoned by 3,000 Russian troops, the two men landed at several places under heavy enemy fire, set fire to government buildings and destroyed enemy equipment and arms. For most prestigious gallantry, he was awarded the most prestigious award for gallantry on February 24, 1857. He died in Torpoint, England at the age of 68.
