Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Rose from Sergeant in Company B, 22nd Ohio Volunteers Infantry to Lieutenant Colonel and Commander of the 5th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry. Towards the end of the War he was made Colonel and commander of the 1st West Virginia Veteran Infantry, which were a group of veterans who had reenlisted to finish out the war, despite already having served for 3 years. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services". He was elected as a Republican to represent Ohio's 12th and 10th Congressional Districts in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1891 until this death in office in 1893.
