Actor. He was a prolific actor with an imposing six-foot frame and beard, who was best known for playing the character roles of doctors, gamblers, club patrons, and earls, usually as a heavy or comic foil in both silent films and sound films, but some were uncredited. He will be best remembered for playing the role of 'Victor Grandet' in the classic romance film drama, "The Conquering Power" (1921). The film which was directed by Rex Ingram, which was based on Honoré de Balzac's work, "Eugénie Grandet," and which was written for the screen by June Mathis, and which also starred Alice Terry, Rudolph Valentino, and Ralph Lewis, tells the story of after losing his father, a playboy moves in with his miserly uncle, who seeks to cheat him out of his inheritance. He was born as Eric Edwin Coulson-Mayne in Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland, on April 28, 1865. He was educated locally in Westminster, England, and in Durham, England. He began his acting career on the stage and went on to spend almost thirty years in numerous stage productions in London, England, and his native Ireland. He appeared in several stage productions of such plays as, "Zasa," at the Grand Theatre in Southampton, England, from 1903 to 1904, "Richard III," at the Lyceum Theatre in London, England, from 1909 to 1910, and "East Lynne," at the Grand Theatre in Southampton, England, from 1912 to 1913. He also had a penchant for appearing in Shakespearean roles. During his time on the stage, he also made the transition to films after moving to Los Angeles, California, in about 1913. He made his actual film debut playing the role of 'Carson Baylis' in the short film drama, "The Dollar Mark" (1914). The film which was directed by O.A.C. Lund, which was written by George Broadhurst and based on his play, and which also starred Robert Warwick, Barbara Tennant, Edward Roseman, Stanley Walpole, and Bart Starkey, tells the story of the mining district of Cobalt, Ontario, which is the setting for the greater share of the picture, and there is careful attention paid to the scenes taken on board the millionaire's yacht when Gresham is determined to get to his bank in time to prove to the clearinghouse committee that he is solvent and in so doing foils the Baylis attempt to take his mine away from him. It is not alone for the control of the mine that there is a struggle, but there is a girl in the story who is sought after by the two big men. Alice Chandler is worth the struggle. For a long time, there seems little hope for Gresham, but the great moment comes when he is able to save Alice's life by carrying her to safety through a wild day, in which they both are at the mercy of the overflowing waters from a dam. Besides, playing the role of 'Carson Baylis' in the short film drama, "The Dollar Mark" (1914), and playing the role of 'Victor Grandet' in the classic romance film drama, "The Conquering Power" (1921), his many other film credits include, "Man Of The Hour" (1914), "The Cotton King" (1915), "The Beloved Vagabond" (1915), "The Yellow Menace" (1916), "The New York Peacock" (1917), "The Submarine Eye" (1917), "The Slave" (1917), "Wife Number Two" (1917), "Thou Shalt Not Steal" (1917), "Her Hour" (1917), "The Tenth Case" (1917), "A Heart's Revenge" (1918), "The Debt Of Honor" (1918), "The Girl And The Judge" (1918), "Peg Of The Pirates" (1918), "Other Men's Daughters" (1918), "The Scar" (1919), "Help!
