U.S. Congressman. Moving to Tennessee, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1793 and practiced law in Hawkins County. He was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives, (1796-97, 1807, 09, 12) and a member of the Tennessee Senate, (1799 -1801). At the outbreak of the of the War of 1812, he was appointed Major General in command of the Eastern Division of the Tennessee Militia and also served in the Creek War, (1813-14). Returning to politics, he was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Congresses, as a Jackson Republican to the Eighteenth Congress and as a Jacksonian to the Nineteenth Congress, serving (1819-27). After his final term, engaged in agricultural pursuits and was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives, in 1837, plus a member of the Tennessee Senate, in 1843.
