Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Served in the Civil War first as a Captain in the 12th United States Regular Infantry regiment, then as Colonel and commander of the 17th New York Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services duirng the war".
