U.S. Congressman. He attended Holston College, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1861, and commenced to practice law in Jefferson County, Tennessee. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he joined the Union Army and served as a Lieutenant Colonel of the 4th Regiment, Tennessee Volunteer Cavalry. After the war, he was appointed attorney general of the third judicial circuit of Tennessee, serving (1866-70) and was U.S. Commissioner at the International Exposition held at Vienna, Austria in 1872. In 1873, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third, Forty-fourth, and Forty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1879. After leaving Congress, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
