U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Union University, in 1914 and graduated from the law department of Cumberland University, in 1917. At the advent of World War I, he was a teacher when he joined the U.S. Army, serving (1918-19). After the war, he was admitted to the bar and established a private law practice in Jackson, Tennessee. Entering politics, he was district attorney general for the twelfth judicial circuit of Tennessee, (1922-33), chairman of the Democratic Executive Committee of Madison County, Tennessee, (1924-33) and the Solicitor of the Post Office Department at Washington, D.C., (1933-42). In 1943, he was elected as a Democrat to the Seventy-eighth Congress and to the next eleven succeeding Congresses, serving until his resignation, in 1966. After leaving Congress, he lived in retirement until his death.
