Robert E. Norton, 84, of Beatrice, formerly of Filley, died on Tuesday, September 9, 2008. He was born on November 25, 1923, in Lincoln, and moved with his family to Beatrice in 1929. He graduated from Beatrice Public Schools in 1941, and after attending the University of Nebraska for two years, joined the Army Air Corps in 1942.

He received pilot training in multi-engine aircraft and was discharged from active duty as a 1st Lt. in 1945. From 1947 to 1954, he was a Captain in the Nebraska National Guard Company C in Beatrice, retiring as Company commander. In 1948, Robert married Margery Barnard. His working career began in Beatrice as a trainee with Gambles. He also worked for Potburg/Rikli Implement Company and was an agent for Bankers Life of Nebraska. In 1953, the family moved to Filley, and Robert began his career in banking covering over 35 years. In 1968, he purchased the bank and retired in 1988 as Chairman of the Board and President. After the death of Margery in 1968, Robert and Gladys Siefkes were married in 1975. Robert enjoyed being involved in community and civic organizations during his 50 years of living in Filley, including being a member of the Filley United Methodist Church, serving numerous offices; as contracting officer for Mud Creek and Bear-Pierce-Cedar Creek Watershed Districts (during this time the Rockford Lake Recreation Area was constructed); secretary of Filley Consolidated Board of Education from 1960 to 1980; president of Gage County Historical Society in 1985; president of the Gage County Hospital Authority from 1985 to 1996; Master of Filley Grange and Master of Temple 175 A.F. and A.M. He was a member of the Centenary United Methodist Church of Beatrice and had recently received his 75-year pin of membership. He was also a member of Am-Vets and Bitting-Norman Post 27 of the American Legion, both of Beatrice. In 2002, Robert and Gladys moved to Flowing Springs in Beatrice. His hobbies included fishing, hunting, woodworking, the Nebraska Huskers, traveling across the country and being with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Gladys of Beatrice; two daughters, Linda Lamb and husband James of Elkhorn and Marcia Busboom and husband John of Pickrell; two sons, David Norton and wife Betty of Filley and Steven Norton and wife Pam of Beatrice; one stepson, Randy Siefkes and wife Jan of Pasadena, California; one stepdaughter, Phyllis Steube and husband Loyal of Winter Park, Colorado; 12 grandchildren, Stefanie Norton Lloyd and husband Scott, Jamie Norton, Kimberly Hubbard and husband Les, Kylie Busboom, Courtney Busboom, Jordan Busboom, Alex Lamb, Colin Lamb, Abbie Lamb, Lisa Korinek and husband Kris, Jason Hippen and wife Julie, Valerie Moffit and husband Robert; three great-grandchildren, Mason Hubbard, Josie Korinek and John Hippen; one sister, Carol Carbone of Sheridan, Wyoming; one brother-in-law, Glen Barnard of Beatrice; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vivan and Gladys Emery Norton; his first wife, Margery, who died in 1968; twin brothers, who died at birth; sister-in-law, Veloura Barnard.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, September 12, 2008, at Centenary United Methodist Church, Sixth and Elk streets, Beatrice, with the Rev. Kelly Karges officiating. Burial will be in the Filley Cemetery. A family prayer service will be held at 1:45 p.m. on Friday in the church library. A memorial has been established to the Filley Cemetery and the Beatrice Community Hospital Foundation with Robert and Audrey Bowers in charge. Military graveside honors will be conducted by the Bitting-Norman Post 27 of the American Legion of Beatrice. The body will lie in state at the Fox Funeral Home, 19th and Garfield, Beatrice, until 9 p.m. Thursday, and then at the church on Friday one hour preceding the services.
