World War I British Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. In the First World War, he served as a Private in the 1st Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment. On May 1, 1915, on the front lines at Ypres, Belgium, his unit came under a German assault. The trench had been vacated by British troops after a gas attack and acting alone, Private Warner entered it in order to prevent the enemy taking possession. Reinforcements were sent to him, but could not reach him owing to the gas. Warner then left the trench and brought up more men, by which time he was completely exhausted. The trench defense held until the enemy attack ceased. Private Warner died the next day from the effects of gas poisoning. For most prestigious gallantry, he was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross Medal in June 1915.
