U.S. Congressman. Grandson of North Carolina Governor Dobbs Spaight, he attended New Bern Academy, Yale College, graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1839, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1840 and commenced to practice law in New Bern, North Carolina. In 1847, he was elected as a Whig to the Thirtieth Congress, serving until 1849. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law. He was a delegate to the North Carolina State secession convention in 1861, to the North Carolina State constitutional convention in 1865 and a member of the North Carolina State House of Commons, (1862, 64). When the Republican coup d'état of 1867, was launched he was arrested by the US Army with the rest of the North Carolina State leadership. Due to poor health, he died under US Army detention at age 46.
