Martha came to this country by herself carrying a 2-year-old, a four-year-old and a five-year-old. There were no disposable diapers in those days, no sippy cups, or little cereal snacks. Young children's needs are high maintenance even without the seasickness, poor food, and weather associated with an eleven-day ocean voyage. An April trip would have been a chilly one crossing the Atlantic.

Documentation states that Martha and the kids were traveling to join their husband and father who was waiting for them in Pawnee, Illinois. It could be imagined that the first thing Martha did when she saw William, was to kiss him lightly on the cheek while saying, "You take the children. I'm taking a nap."
