US Congressman. A member of the North Carolina state house of representatives in 1941, he resigned in 1942 to serve in the United States Navy during World War II. A gunnery officer, he achieved the rank of Lieutenant. In 1957, he was elected to represent North Carolina in the United States House of Representatives, serving until 1969.
