Civil War Union Brigadier General. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York, but resigned before graduation. He later served during the Mexican War. At the start of the Civil War, he was a full-rank Captain in the 4th United States Artillery. He was later Colonel of the 4th New York Artillery, and was commissioned Brigadier General to rank from May 23, 1863. At the end of the war, he was brevetted Major General of Volunteers and Brigadier General, US Regular Army. He retired in 1882 as a Colonel, making his home in Detroit, Michigan, where he died at the age of 72.
