He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1906, graduated from the law department of Columbia University in 1907, was admitted to the bar, and commenced to practice law in Charlotte, North Carolina, in 1910. He also engaged in agricultural pursuits and was a judge of the City Recorder's Court and Juvenile Court of Charlotte, North Carolina (1913 to 1919). In addition, he was assistant U.S. District Attorney for the western district of North Carolina (1919 to 1921) and served in the North Carolina State Senate (1925 to 1927). In 1947, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eightieth, Eighty-first and Eighty-second Congresses, serving until 1953. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
