U.S. Congressman. During the Revolutionary War, he served as a First Lieutenant Quarter Master in the 2nd North Carolina Regiment, Continental Army. After the war, he was Sheriff of Camden District South Carolina, (1789-91) and commissioner in equity, in 1791. He then studied law, as admitted to the bar in 1792 and commenced practice in Camden, South Carolina. He was a member of South Carolina House of Representatives, (1796-99) and judge of the South Carolina State Supreme Court, (1801-15). In 1819, he was elected as a Republican to the Sixteenth Congress, serving until 1821. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he practiced law until his death at age 55.
