Architect. He is best known for designing San Francisco, California's landmark Coit Tower in 1933. A native of Oakland, California, he graduated from the University of California in 1896 and then traveled to Paris, France where he graduated from l'Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1901. After returning to California, he joined John Bakewell Jr. to form the architectural firm of Bakewell and Brown. Together they would be responsible for several major projects in San Francisco, including the PG&E Headquarters building, the San Francisco Art Institute, and San Francisco's new City Hall (completed in 1915). After the dissolution of the firm, Brown continued in architecture and would work on projects such as the Bancroft Library and the San Francisco Transbay Terminal. He adopted a modern, streamlined style for Coit Tower, the most celebrated of his later buildings.
