U.S. Congressman. He attended Newton College, engaged in agricultural pursuits, joined the Farmers Alliance in 1889, and was the North Carolina Catawba County district lecturer in 1890. He was a delegate at the St. Louis, Missouri, labor conference in 1892 and was elected vice president of the North Carolina State Alliance in 1894. In 1895, he was elected as a Populist to the Fifty-fourth and Fifty-fifth Congresses, serving until 1899. An unsuccessful candidate for re-nomination, he resumed his agricultural pursuits until his death.
