U.S. Congressman. He was attending the University of North Carolina when he left to serve as a Private in Company B, 10th Regiment, North Carolina State Troops, Confederate Army, during the Civil War. After the war, he graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1865, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1866 and was register of deeds for Rowan County, North Carolina, until 1868. He was a member of the North Carolina State House of Representatives in 1876, served in the North Carolina State Senate in 1878 and a commissioner to codify the statute laws of the General Assembly, in 1881. He also was presiding justice of the inferior court of Rowan County, in 1884. In 1885, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-ninth Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1895. After leaving Congress, he practiced law and served in the North Carolina State Senate, (1900-02).
