U.S. Senator. Born in Warrenton, North Carolina, he attended Raleigh Male Academy, graduated from Wake Forest College in 1893 and was editor of the Biblical Recorder, (1893-1907). He was a member of the North Carolina State Board of Agriculture, (1896-1900), studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1908 and commenced to practice law in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was a United States collector of internal revenue for North Carolina, (1913-21), a member of the North Carolina Constitutional Commission in 1915 and a trustee of the University of North Carolina, in 1930. In 1930, he was elected as Democrat to the United States Senate and served until his death at age 73 in Raleigh, North Carolina.
