U.S. Congressman and C.S.A. Senator. While engaged in agricultural pursuits, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1835, and commenced practicing law in Roxboro, North Carolina. Entering politics, he was elected as a candidate of the American Party to the Thirty-fourth Congress, serving from 1857 to 1857. Refusing to run for re-election during the Civil War, he served in the Confederate States Senate in 1863. After the war, he was appointed by North Carolina Governor Zebulon Vance, president of the states' reconstruction convention, in 1865. From 1868 to 1879, he served as an associate justice on the North Carolina State Supreme Court. Retiring from politics, he engaged in banking until his death.
