Motion Picture Pioneer, Inventor. Shearer was credited as the recording supervisor on over 850 MGM films between 1928 and 1954. He developed a recording process for the studios that virtually eliminated unwanted background noise, and was eventually made head of MGM's sound department. Shearer won 12 Oscars for "Best Sound" during his career. He received an additional Oscar in 1959 in the "Science and Technical" category as the co-creator of MGM's "Camera 65" widescreen system. He was also the brother of actress Norma Shearer.
