Crimea War Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served in the British Army during the Crimean War as a Sergeant Major in the 2nd Dragoons, Royal Scot Greys. He was awarded his VC for his bravery on October 25, 1854, at the Battle of Balaclava, when his brigade, the Heavy Cavalry Brigade, made a charge that was a precursor to the subsequent famous and suicidal “Charge of the Light Brigade”. His citation reads “Saved the life of an Officer, in the Heavy Cavalry Charge at Balaklava, who was surrounded by Russian Cavalry, by his gallant conduct in riding up to his rescue and cutting off the head of one Russian, disabling and dispersing the others”. He was awarded the Victoria Cross Medal on June 26, 1857 by Queen Victoria, and was the first Scottish-born soldier to receive the honor. He later achieved the rank of Lieutenant before leaving the army. His Medal is on display at the Art Gallery of South Australia in Adelaide, Australia.
