Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. A native of Scotland, he was gazetted for the award on June 21, 1859 for his actions as a lieutenant in the 42nd Regiment of Foot (later The Black Watch (Royal Highlanders)) of the British Army on March 9, 1858 at Lucknow, British India, during the 1857 Indian Mutiny. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he joined the British Army in January 1855 and served with the 42nd Highlanders in the Crimean War and participated in the Siege of Sebastopol, Turkey. In 1857 he was sent with his unit to British India during the 1857 Mutiny and saw action at Cawnpore, Seriaghat, Kudygunge, Shumsabad, and Lucknow, the latter for which he was severely wounded and won the Victoria Cross for gallantry. He later achieved the rank of major and participated in the Third Anglo-Ashanti War (1873 to 1874) at the British Gold Coast (present-day Ghana) where he participated in several engagements (including the Battle of Amoaful). Following the war, he returned to England and died in Harberton, Devon at the age of 38 from an illness he contracted while serving in the British Gold Coast. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "For conspicuous bravery, when engaged before Lucknow, on the 9th March, 1858, in having led a portion of his Company, stormed a bastion mounting two guns, and spiked the guns, by which the advanced position, held during the night of the 9th of March, was rendered secure from the fire of Artillery. Lieutenant Farquharson was severely wounded, while holding an advanced position, on the morning of the 10th of March." In addition to the Victoria Cross, he received the Crimean War Medal (with Sebastopol clasp), The Indian Mutiny Medal (with Relief of Lucknow and Lucknow clasps), and the Ashantee Medal. His Victoria Cross and other medals are on display at the Black Watch Museum in Perth, Scotland.
