He was the son of Joseph and Anne Rickey Abbott and was born in Nottingham, now Hamilton, New Jersey.

He attended Friends' School and in his teens worked in the drug and hardware store of Samuel Paxson, on Warren Street, near Hanover. Later he worked in Philadelphia in the hardware business.

In 1835, he was back in Trenton and in his own hardware business, the very same of Samuel Paxson that he worked in his teens.

He abandoned the business 4 years later and worked in the Mechanics' and Manufacturers' Bank of Trenton, later becoming Mechanics' National. He would make President about 1850, but would resign to associate himself with Cooper & Hewitt, then proprietors of the Trenton Iron Company, and was vice-president and treasurer of that corporation for many years. He would again become president of Mechanics' National Bank, about 1870 until his death.

He married Susan Conrad, who was his cousin, daughter of Solomon White and Elizabeth Abbott Conrad.
