African Leader. The first President of the Central African Republic after it achieved independence from France in 1960. Dacko was a native of Bouchia, Central Africa, and educated at the Ecole Normale in Brazzaville, Congo, where he studied to become a teacher before entering politics. He first served as a Member of Parliament in the Social Evolution Movement of Black Africa Party (MESAN), Minister of Agriculture, Stockbreeding, Water, and Forestry, and Minsiter of the Interior, Economy and Trade. Dacko served as the Prime Minister of the Central African Republic from May 1, 1959, to November 12, 1960, and President of the Central African Republic from August 14, 1960, to December 31, 1965, and then September 20, 1979, to September 1, 1981. Dacko was twice removed from office from a militray junta led by his cousin, the military leader Jean-Bedel Bokassa, and survived an assasssination attempt. Although never to become President again he ran as a candidate for President in 1992 and in 1999. In 1993 he founded and became leader of the Mouvement Pour La Democratie Et Le Developpement (MDD). Dacko continued to fight for better conditions for his country until his death at the age of 73 on November 20, 2003.
