U.S. Congressman. Moving to Ohio, he attended the University of Lexington, Kentucky, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1841, and commenced to practice law in Indiana. Returning to Ohio in 1843, he continued to practice law in Xenia and was clerk of the Greene County Courts (1845 to 1851). Entering politics, he served in the Ohio State Senate in 1857, was a member of the Ohio State House of Representatives in 1863, and judge of the court of common pleas (1864 to 1871). In 1869, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-first Congress, serving until 1871. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he resumed practicing law until his death.
